ABOUT PHD ADMISSIONS IN THE CSONKA PÁL DOCTORAL SCHOOL

 

The main focus of research in the Csonka Pál Doctoral School at the Faculty of Architecture, Budapest University of Technology and Economics covers scientific problems related to  architecture, construction, structural mechanics, geometry and applied mechanics.. The 4-year-long curriculum, upon successful defense, leads to a PhD in architecture and engineering. Performance of the student is evaluated on a comprehensive exam after the second year. The main focus of the curriculum is independent research in a close collaboration with the supervisor of the student. The main goal is a high-quality doctoral thesis supported by publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.

Admission to the Doctoral School is announced annually. A completed MSc in a relevant field (e.g. Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Applied Mathematics), fluent English and proof of initiated scientific activities (publication, conference attendance, undergraduate research project, ...etc.) are prerequisites of the admission exam. For candidates supported by the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program nomination from the Tempus Public Foundation is also essential. https://apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu/

Before starting the admission process, the candidate should choose a research topic from the pool of announced projects. The Doctoral School offers a wide range of topics, including, but not restricted to, History and Theory of Architecture, Engineering Mechanics, Building Construction, Energy efficiency and Urban Studies. To start admission, contact a supervisor with a valid announcement from the list above. The deadline of application is at the end of May, and an admission exam is held in the second half of June. For the actual dates please, consult the web-page.

The language of tuition is in English, no Hungarian is required. The tuition-fee for international students not supported by the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program is 1.400.000 HUF/term (approx. 4500 Euros). Upon good performance some reduction of the fee may take place.

CURRICULUM OF CSONKA PÁL DOCTORAL SCHOOL

 

 The Curriculum of the Doctoral School consists of three main moduls:

 

1.     Professional courses

 Obligatory professional courses: one Comprehensive course in each semesters in the first two years:

·       History and theory of Science: lecturer: KERÉKGYÁRTÓ, Béla PhD

·       Computer science: lecturer: SIPOS, András PhD, VÁRKONYI, Péter PhD

·       Research methodology: lecturer: DOMOKOS, Gábor PhD

·       History of building structures: lecturer: KRÄHLING, János PhD, Dr. SAJTOS István PhD

 Optional courses (Course in external institution): Doctoral students have to complete 8 optional courses in the first 2 years of the doctoral school to be qualified for the comprehensive exam Optimally, it means 2 courses per semester, but the distribution is optional.

 The optional courses must be chosen from the courses of any faculties and formations of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as well as external institutions of higher education, as long as the course meets high standards and it is related to the student’s research topic. The optimal course must be accreditated by the Council of the Doctoral School in advance.

 

2.     Educational modul

Education under guidance is an optional modul in the curriculum. Students have the possibility to decide in accordance with their supervisors if they fulfil the credits of these courses in each semester.

3.     Research modul

Representing one of the most important part of the curriculum, research modul consists of credits from publications and research activity that are overlooked at the end of each semesters by the supervisor teachers and the Doctoral School.
